Hello, Altered Stories Family,
I wanted to take a moment to talk to you about a subject that comes up every year but has many different opinions. The question is about Halloween.
Should a Christion celebrate Halloween or All Saint’s Eve?
Some say yes, it’s okay, because every day is created by God, and we should be a light in the darkness. To this end, churches do things like a harvest festival, or trunk or treat.
Some believe that no we should not, because of the roots of this day, they come from pagan origins and believe God did not want his people doing these kinds of things. There is a belief that we are to be different, set apart from them. We are to be in the world, but not of the world. John 17:16
I personally agree with the second opinion. Yes, God created every day, but he did not create every practice, and he over and over again commanded his people not to take part in these things.
Let’s take a practice that on its face value seems harmless bobbing for apples. How did this practice start to begin with?
It was done back during this day, the druids would take people, and give them a choice. They could either bob for apples, with in a vat of acid, burning their skin horribly, or they can be placed in a wicker cage, and burned alive.
This is where the practice of bobbing for apples started. Ever since I learned of this, I have never done this.
You can learn more about bobbing for apples here.
Many of the other things done such as trick or treating, have similar pagan beginnings, although Christians did take over the pagan practices.
I would suggest no matter what you decide about celebrating Halloween, please take it to the Lord in prayer, and let him speak to you. Please also pray for the protection of all children who will be trick or treating, that they may be kept safe.
Until next I write,
Teresa
