Hello, Altered Stories Ministry Family,

Soon, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Day. I want to highlight something that we also see in the scriptures.

In Philippians 4:8 in the Bible, it talks about whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is praiseworthy, think on these things.

The thing is that the author of this verse, Paul, wrote this while he was in a Roman jail.

Likewise, King wrote his letter in a Birmingham jail and covered many of the issues of the day, including unjust laws, when to act, and the churches’ role in the problems of the day.

If we were to compare the two letters, you could say that Philippians shows how faith sustains believers in unjust suffering, while the letter from Birmingham jail shows how faith demands action against unjust systems.

Paul writes to comfort the faithful in chains; King writes to confront the comfortable about the chains. King also expressed a hope that the church will do right, that righteousness will prevail over injustice.

I would encourage you to read Philippians chapter 4 and also the letter King wrote and ask yourself, how both can be applied in the issues of the day.

God bless,

Teresa
