…Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

Grace and Truth – Part 2

“The law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17

Last time I shared how I struggled to understand grace and how God brought me to the place of asking him to help me understand what grace was. It truly has been an incredible journey in discovering grace and therefore discovering Jesus. There are so many nuggets about grace and Jesus to discover!

So what is grace? The best definition I’ve heard is grace is the unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor of God. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve. That’s what Jesus came for. He came to take what we deserved so he could give us what he deserved – only the best for God’s one and only Son!

If I had to pick one lesson that God has taught me so far that has made the most difference in my life concerning grasping what grace is it would have to be when he led me to ask the Holy Spirit to remove the veil of the law from my eyes so I could see Jesus. Without really understanding why he was leading me to do this, I just did it. And the most amazing thing happened. I began to see Jesus in the bible like never before. I began to see the truth about why he came and what he accomplished for us. I began to grasp what he meant when he said on the cross “It is FINISHED!” I began to see how much he loves each and every one of us. How even if you or I were the only person ever to have received him, he still would have come for us. That’s how much he loves you and me! I had been like the Jewish people of his day…I had been blinded by the law and my own self-righteousness for so many years. But oh for the grace of God! The grace of God is the only reason I am where I am today and have experienced his healing touch. I am truly grateful that God has removed the veil from my eyes so I could see Jesus. And as I grew in seeing Jesus, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Him. He didn’t come to condemn me…he came to save me!

For years my prayer has been “Lord, get the law out of me so I can receive your abundance of grace.” As Christmas approaches and we focus on the birth of Jesus, may God enable us to receive the abundance of grace that Jesus’ coming made possible for us.
