In this episode, I feature special guest Marin Canaday, who shares her inspiring and courageous transformative God story of overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Marin is a dedicated stay-home mom, speaker and author of two children’s picture books, My Little Monster and The Very Best Me. Her second book has been recognized by the Child Mind Institute as one of the Best Kid’s Books on Mental Health for 2024. In our authentic conversation, Marin shares her God story that offers a beacon of encouragement to those struggling with anxiety and OCD, reminding them that their struggles are not defining and that a brighter future is within reach with the hope of Jesus Christ. She also shares ministering words from scripture to those who need encouragement from God’s word as they battle anxiety and OCD or have children who are struggling with these disorders. This episode also includes a mental health tip from ministry partner and mental health counselor, Sherrie Pucket.

In This Episode:

      • Marin is a dedicated stay-home mom, speaker, and author of two children’s picture books, My Little Monster and The Very Best Me.
      • It is important to share your God story because people around you who are suffering that you don’t even know are struggling can have hope from hearing what God has done in your life,
      • In college, she thought she would like to be a children’s book author. It didn’t work out at that time, but she had no idea how God would use that later in her life.
      • Marin shares their “Freedom from the Chains of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder” God story.
      • She grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ early in her childhood, but then the devil began to twist the salvation message in her young mind with lies. That faulty thinking grew and multiplied in her adult years. She didn’t know she was fighting OCD.
      • In junior high, she had her first serious episode of OCD about germs. Her mom became her voice that would speak truth to the lie. Her mom became the person she came to for relief rather than depending on God.
      • God is the one who has the power over mental illness and has the truth that will set us free.
      • In school, she found relief by hiding in sports and studying. Volleyball gave her relief from the anxiety and tension.
      • When her youngest turned one, her life was turned completely upside down. It was hard to eat, sleep, and care for her children.
      • Two years later, she was sicker than she ever was before and knew this was a life struggle. God showed up in a big way and began proving her obsessions wrong.
      • At 32, she received the diagnosis that she was fighting OCD during a 3-year episode.
      • God gave her the idea to portray her OCD as a monster in a children’s book. She sent it to the first publisher and all the details fell into place.
      • Don’t be afraid to bring a therapist or psychiatrist in and reach out for help.
